The bond is established at conception and represents an unbroken expanding relationship between the developing human being and the environment, the primary environment being the mother resonating her relationship or bond with her environment. If the bond is not reconfirmed at birth, leaving the baby lost, confused, abandoned, there follows a series of compensatory survival reactions. The first to suffer is prefrontal cortex. This structure will not develop in the same way as if the bond, being the safe, nurturing place, had been maintained. So too with the intelligence of the heart, which must take its cues from the heart field of the mother. And so it is with all the other unfolding capacities.

They say the bond is simply the biological response of the growing infant in-utero to its environment. The environment is the mother. And the first year, at least after birth when the fourth brain structure must be developed by the nurturing environment of the mother, it’s simply an extension of the very same bond. There’s no difference between the bond biological reaction, the biological response of the infant in-utero to its environment, the mother, and the infant after birth and its environment which is the mother. That’s all part of an unbroken bond situation.
The bond isn’t established at birth. The bond is established at conception. The bond is reconfirmed at birth in the new setting outside the utero rather than inside the utero. If the bond is not reconfirmed and instead the infant feels that they’ve been dumped out of the bond and abandoned you have a whole raft of reactions that take place. And what are those reactions, they’ll all survival reactions. If the infant survives at all they’re going to survive at the price of the higher cortical structures which are designed to start unfolding at the moment of birth itself and unfolding according to the nurturing environment again. So the first thing that’s going to suffer is the prefrontal cortices. They will no grow the same as they would have had the bond been unbroken.
The heart cannot develop in the same way unless it’s in the heart field of the mother that it was in-utero or a heart field. As I always say, any port in the storm, if it’s papa’s heart field but let there be a heart field that that infant is in immediate proximity to or immediately adjacent to right up against. The visual field we know is critically dependent on the appropriate visual world which is the human face and the auditory world is the continuing of the auditory world established in-utero. So the whole sensory motor system, the heart and the brain develops then according to a disruption in the natural thing and we compensate by building what, a defensive survival orientation. So that infant unless something happens is going to grow up convinced that the world is a hostile enemy and they must protect themselves against that world. There won’t be true relationship, they’ll be only relating from the standpoint of my defenses as opposed to your defenses and so on. So we’ve got a whole raft of breakdowns of the higher human virtues and an enhancement of the lower animal survival virtue. Very simply there’s no way around it and we’ll spend the rest of our lives rationalizing why it is that we can’t respond appropriately to each other.
