I had a miraculous experience in 1976. I had worn glasses for nine years and I started playing with the idea of improving my vision. I had been a kid with a learning difficulty my whole life. Reading was very difficult. I was a non-reader. In fact, I got out of high school and six months later turned twenty, so you know I had difficulties in school.
When I got into Optometric training I was just barely getting by, just barely passing. When I entered my third year one of the student doctors, a fourth year student, examine me as part of his clinical training. This doctor examined me and said, yes you need a stronger prescription but he also said I had some real problems using my eyes together as a teen. No one had ever told me that.
I always had excellent acuity so they said there was nothing wrong with my eyes. He gave me some simple vision exercises for about ten minutes a day and within two months I made Dean’s List every quarter until I graduated. I graduated top ten in my class.
That happened in 1971. In 1975 and early 1976 I applied the same premise to my own eye sight difficulty and began to not only do vision exercises but to gradually wean myself from my glasses by gradually reducing the prescription of the glasses rather than increasing them, which is what is traditionally done.
I was meditating during that process. One day I was sitting in my room, I was meditating, and I had a profound experience. Today you might call it an out of body experience but I never had such a thing in the mid 70’s. All of the sudden, even though my eyes were closed, I found myself viewing myself in the room. It felt as though I was seeing holographically. It was such a touching experience. When I came out of the meditation not only did my eye continue to be clear, but I felt as though I had become the sky. I felt like I was everywhere.
When my eye sight and vision had that profound shift I started noticing that I could see things that I never saw before. I started noticing that the air wasn’t invisible. I became very aware that at any time when I looked out I noticed sparkles in the air, not only sparkles but it felt like the sparkles were riding on a background of a wave motion, like an ocean of air with this sparkling activity.
Then I started noticing that I began to see aura’s although I never heard the word aura’s at that time, around everything, around animals, plants, and so on. I became aware of my patients, as they answered questions, that they had this subtle energetic light around their heads specifically that was continually changing in coloration. And what came to me was oh, the body is in some way relating with light.
At the time I was trained as an Optometrist. People came to me with different sorts of vision difficulties except my practice wasn’t a traditional Optometric practice. It wasn’t the practice for prescribing glasses because eye sight got worse. It was specifically a practice to train people in allowing themselves to see in the way they saw as children. A lot of my work was preventive vision care, remediate vision care. I worked with more than 10,000 children that had visually related learning difficulties because that was something so dear to my own heart. I worked with professional athletes, U.S. Olympic Team, and basically it was all about vision performance. How do we take this primary navigational system of the body, the visual system, and optimize its capacity so that we really have a sense of what it truly means to see, on many, many different levels? Whether it is reading or playing the piano or driving a car, but how does that also relate to the aspects of consciousness that we’ve heard about for so many years that also have to do with seeing?
