As the remaining minutes of 2020 evaporated, I turned the last pages of JFK and the Unspeakable, Why He Died and Why It Matters, by James W. Douglass, 2008. We all know the story; the Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, secret dialogues with Nikita Khrushchev, Dr. Strangelove, Kennedy determined to pull American troops out of Vietnam, the President’s secret service security ordered to stand back in Dallas, a puff of smoke behind the fence on the grassy knoll, the stolen autopsy by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the lone nut CIA operative, double agent Oswald shot by another CIA operative, Jack Ruby, J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI, and the Mafia, Zapruder’s film of the motorcade playing again and again. I was fourteen. The image of a large black speaker describing JFK’s murder, setting on the grass outside the gymnasium door, is firmly etched.
