Rabbi Lerner—It is time to launch an “agonizing reappraisal” of the destructive role that religious institutions have had upon Humanity.
The continuing violence against women and her children throughout human history must be understood within a religious framework. Transforming Cultures of Violence into Cultures of Peace is not possible without a transformation of values and assumptions of gender inequality inherent in religious theology.
So God created man in his own image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27-29).
Now God saw that the whole world was corrupt and full of violence. In his sight the world had become corrupted, for all men had lived corrupt lives on earth. God said to Noah, 'The loathsomeness of all mankind has become plain to me, for through them the earth is full of violence. I intend to destroy them, and the earth with them" (Genesis 6:12-14.)
So the Word became flesh; he came to dwell among us, and we saw his glory, such glory as befits the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. John 1: 10.
God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, that everyone who has faith in him may not die but have eternal life. It was not to judge the world that God sent his Son into the world, but that through him the world might be saved. John 3:16-17. (Judgment was passed in John 3: 16-17).
Only God the Father could make possible that the “ Word Became Flesh”—neither his “Chosen People” nor the Roman Soldiers. This act of Divine Filicide equated Violence with Love where Sons and Daughters can be sacrificed for Devine purposes, which was exemplified by King Agamemnon in the murder of his daughter Iphigenia. In the words of Lucretius in The Nature of Things: …”Iphigenia, killed by her father Agamemnon as a sacrificial victim so that the Greeks might obtain a fair wind for their voyage to Troy. He sums this up in a line as famous as any in the entire poem: So potent was Religion in persuading to do wrong (I: 101).
The visual beauty of the fiery cosmos, as evidence of the beauty of God, as advocated by Rabbi Lerner, pales into insignificance compared to the savage brutality of Homo sapiens, the image of God.
How can a Perfect God create an imperfect Universe? Imperfection cannot flow from Perfection!
God created Gender Inequality and subordinated Woman to Man—an invidious doctrine that must be abolished.
